India, Sept. 16 -- The government has said that 1.25 crore houses have been sanctioned under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) and PMAY-U 2.0, with more than 1 crore pucca houses completed and handed over to beneficiaries across the country as of August 9, 2026. The figures highlight the expansion of affordable housing in urban areas since the launch of PMAY-U in 2015.

The scheme has placed women's ownership at the centre of urban housing support. Of the 1.25 crore houses sanctioned, around 1 crore have been allotted to women either in the name of the female head of the household or through joint ownership.
