India, Aug. 28 -- India is accelerating its nuclear power expansion, with nine reactor units having a combined capacity of 7.5 GW currently under construction. The country operates 24 nuclear reactors with a total installed capacity of 8.78 GW as it works towards its ambitious target of achieving 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047.

The government has approved 10 indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) in fleet mode and pre-project activities for two 500 MW Fast Breeder Reactors. Recent policy measures, including the Nuclear Energy Mission and SHANTI Act, 2025, are aimed at accelerating capacity addition, encouraging innovation and strengthening domestic manufacturing.
