India, Sept. 4 -- India's push towards Net Zero by 2070 is set to receive a new boost from geothermal energy following the commissioning of the country's first two geothermal wells in Puga Valley, Ladakh. Unlike solar and wind power, geothermal energy can provide low-carbon renewable electricity around the clock, making it a potentially valuable addition to India's rapidly expanding clean energy portfolio.

The government notified the National Policy on Geothermal Energy in September 2025, creating a framework for exploring and developing India's underground heat resources.
