India, Sept. 11 -- India is set to move towards fully digital and barrier-free highway tolling by February, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Friday. Under the proposed system, motorists will no longer need to stop at toll plazas to make payments, marking the next phase in India's transition towards technology-driven highway operations.

Speaking at the Global Fintech Fest 2026, Gadkari said the government plans to combine FASTag with vehicle number-plate recognition to make toll collection more efficient. He said the technology could result in an incremental increase of around Rs10,000 crore in annual toll revenues by improving the identification and tracking of vehicles using tolled highway stretches.
