India, May 1 -- A thunderstorm accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain tore the sacred Patitapabana Bana atop the Jagannath Temple in Puri on Thursday. The holy flag, mounted on the temple's Nilachakra, was damaged due to the intense weather conditions, a servitor said today.
As per temple traditions, Chunara Sevayats hoist the Patitapabana Bana on the Nilachakra every afternoon before the Sandhya Dhupa ritual. The practice is a daily offering and holds deep religious significance. According to established customs, even the presence of a small or symbolic flag ensures the continuity and sanctity of rituals dedicated to Lord Jagannath.
