India, Sept. 28 -- A new study published in the journal Obesity found that more than 1.1 million people in the United States were prescribed GLP-1 drugs without a recorded medical condition that qualified them for the treatment under US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines.

The researchers analyzed data from COSMOS, a database containing more than 300 million patient records from thousands of hospitals and clinics in the US and other countries using software developed by Epic Systems.

The researchers looked at prescriptions for three GLP-1 drugs approved for weight management - liraglutide, semaglutide and tirzepatide.
