India, July 18 -- R. Kelly, who is currently serving a 30-year sentence at a federal prison in North Carolina, has filed a request, asking U.S. President Donald Trump to commute his sentence, according to the Justice Department's website.

The Chicago Tribune first reported about Kelly's request on Tuesday (July 14).

The Justice Department's website has listed the request as pending with the White House Office of the Pardon Attorney, according to Rolling Stone.

A White House official said in a statement that the move "appears to be a random submission through the public portal which anyone can submit an application through."
