India, Aug. 20 -- New Zealand posted a merchandise trade deficit of NZ$578 million in July, Statistics New Zealand said on Thursday.

That was well shy of expectations for a surplus of NZ$70 million following the upwardly revised NZ$203 million surplus in June (originally NZ$142 million).

Exports came in at NZ$6.71 billion, up from the downwardly revised NZ$6.53 billion in the previous month (originally NZ$6.63 billion).

Imports were at NZ$7.28 billion, up from the downwardly revised NZ$6.33 billion a month earlier (originally NZ$6.49 billion).
