India, Sept. 24 -- Hong Kong's foreign trade deficit increased markedly in August from a year ago as imports grew faster than exports, data from the Census and Statistics Department showed on Thursday.

The trade shortfall rose to HK$71.2 billion in August from HK$25.4 billion in the same month last year. In July, the trade balance showed a deficit of HK$4.9 billion. Moreover, this was the largest trade shortfall since March.
