India, Oct. 29 -- Gold prices fell toward $4,000 an ounce on Thursday after the U.S. Federal Reserve held interest rates steady, as widely expected, but offered little clarity on its next move.

Spot gold fell almost 1 percent to $4,027.08 an ounce while U.S. gold futures were down 0.3 percent at $4,040.62 an ounce.

The U.S. dollar index was holding ground after posting modest losses the previous day as the Fed kept interest rates unchanged despite persistent inflation and dissents from Fed governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack.
