India, Aug. 31 -- In one of the greatest upsets in the history of grand slam tennis, Novak Djokovic was beaten in the first-round of US Open tennis tournament.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion broke down in tears towards the end of his tragic match against Argentina's unseeded Mariano Navone at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York, Sunday.

His 7-6(5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 loss in a grueling five-set match that lasted four hours and 36 minutes marked the first time the Serb had lost in the opening round of a Grand Slam tournament since 2006.

"I think it was obvious that it was an awful feeling on the court for me," Djokovic told reporters after his dreams of a record 25th Grand Slam shattered by the 25 year-old Argentine star, ranked No. 49.
