India, May 24 -- The Australian stock market is trading notably higher in mid-market trading on Monday after opening in the red, extending the gains in the previous session, following the broadly positive cues from Wall Street on Friday. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index is moving above the 8,700.00 level, with gains in mining and financial stocks partially offset by weakness in energy and technology stocks.

The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index is gaining 48.70 points or 0.56 percent to 8,705.70, after hitting a low of 8,644.70 and a high of 8,713.00 earlier. The broader All Ordinaries Index is up 49.00 points or 0.55 percent to 8,926.20. Australian stocks closed modestly higher on Friday.
