Nepal, Aug. 14 -- The Special Court on Thursday sentenced Mayor of Bagmati Municipality (BM) in Sarlahi, Bharat Thapa, to eight years in prison.

Thapa, along with BM's Officer Bimal Kumar Pokharel and Chief of Planning Department Sagar Poudel have been charged in the case of embezzling river resources. Pokharel and Poudel duos have also been slapped with imprisonment for similar periods.

The joint bench of Special Court Chairperson Justice Tek Narayan Kunwar and member Justices Murari Babu Shrestha and Bidur Koirala on August 6 issued verdict against the accused, however it declared the penalty amount only on Thursday.
