Nigeria, Oct. 9 -- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Avocats Sans Frontieres, Australian High Commission, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Spanish embassy in Nigeria on Friday called for the revocation of the death penalty in Nigeria.

They made the call at the NHRC's head office in Abuja to commemorate the International Day Against the Death Penalty, observed annually on 10 October.

The NHRC's Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu, represented by the Director of Legal Services and Enforcement, Rabir Anwar, called for "transition of Nigeria's tenure clause into an official, effective moratorium on execution."
