India, May 7 -- Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has declined C. Joseph Vijay's claim to form the government, stating that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam failed to establish the required majority in the Assembly.

The clarification from Lok Bhavan came shortly after Vijay met the Governor for the second time within 24 hours in an effort to stake claim to power following TVK's strong performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

In an official statement, Raj Bhavan said the Governor had explained to Vijay that the "requisite majority support" needed to form the government had not been established in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
