India, Oct. 18 -- The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday sought responses of the Union Government and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on online frauds observing that such offences strike at the "very foundation" of public trust in the system. The court took cognisance of a glaring case of digital arrest of a senior citizen couple in Haryana's Ambala on the basis of forged documents by fraudsters to extort '1.05 crore.
A Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi flagged the rising number of digital arrest cases across the country and sought the response of the Union Government and the CBI in the case registered as suo motu after couple wrote to Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on September 21 informing about the incident.
