India, Oct. 8 -- The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday directed the immediate release of a life convict, who has been in custody for almost 22 years in connection with a murder case.

A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran delivered the verdict on an appeal filed by the convict, who had challenged an order of the Bombay High Court.

The bench said the appellant was seeking pre-mature release after two decades of incarceration.

It noted that the appellant had approached the State for the remission of his life sentence, upon which the Government procured a report from the court that had convicted him initially.
