India, March 12 -- Penalties amounting to over Rs 5.63 crore have been imposed on periodicals through the Press Sewa Portal and 88,315 publications across the country have been cancelled, the Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday.
In a written reply, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan said all applications for registration of periodicals are now processed digitally through the Press Sewa Portal under the Press and Registration of Periodicals (PRP) Act, 2023.
He said over 1.5 lakh physical records of newspaper registrations created under the Press and Registration of Books (PRB) Act, 1867, which has now been repealed, have been digitised and integrated with the portal.
