India, July 24 -- Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday criticised Delhi University for advising students to "stay away" from protests at Jantar Mantar, asking how the varsity could "threaten" students for exercising their democratic rights.

"How dare you threaten students for exercising their democratic rights? Please note, you are the ones that will be held accountable when the time comes," Gandhi said in a social media post, tagging a Delhi University advisory urging students to stay away from Jantar Mantar.

The university, in a post on Thursday night, said any unlawful assemblies or demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, which are regulated under Supreme Court directives, may invite legal action.
