India, Aug. 31 -- A police officer sustained serious head injuries after he was allegedly hit with a helmet by a man during Onam celebrations on Manaveeyam Road here, officials on Monday said.

The Museum Police have registered a case of attempt to murder against the accused, who was taken into custody, they said.

The incident occurred around 11.45 pm on Sunday when Sreejith S R (32), a police officer deployed on duty in connection with the Onam week celebrations, and his colleagues asked a group allegedly creating a nuisance on Manaveeyam Road to disperse.
