India, Oct. 14 -- Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly refuted claims of her making insensitive remarks in the Durgapur private medical college gangrape case even as a political fire storm erupted after she said that the girl students should better not venture out of their hostels in the night.

Senior BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia called Banerjee a "blot on womanhood," while Union junior minister Sukanta Majumdar wondered whether the Chief Minister wanted women to wear burqas.

"Does she want women to wear burqas and stay indoors... this is what Mamata Banerjee wants to do to save the honour of women in Bengal, she has lost her sense of reasoning and reasons to continue in power," Majumdar said.
