India, May 23 -- At least 90 people were killed after a massive gas explosion struck a coal mine in China's Shanxi province on Friday, marking one of the country's deadliest mining disasters in more than a decade.

According to Chinese state media, around 247 workers were underground at the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan county when the blast occurred.

Emergency rescue teams rushed to the site and continued search operations for survivors. Authorities said the explosion took place shortly after a carbon monoxide alert was issued, with reports suggesting gas levels had exceeded safety limits.
