India, June 26 -- The accused in the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Delhi allegedly waited for around 45 minutes before abducting the child from a pavement where she was sleeping beside her family, police said during the investigation.

According to investigators, the accused, a cab driver, kept watch on the family and allegedly waited until the girl moved away from her mother in her sleep before picking her up. Police said the incident occurred in the Mehrauli area.

The accused allegedly took the child away in his vehicle before sexually assaulting and killing her. The body was later recovered, following which police launched an intensive investigation.
