New Delhi, Aug. 8 -- In a rare gesture of solidarity, China has publicly expressed support for India following a dramatic escalation in trade tensions with the United States. This comes after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on August 6 imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports, bringing the total tariff burden to 50 per cent.
The White House has cited India's continued oil imports from Russia-whether directly or indirectly-as the reason behind the sharp trade action. The new tariffs are set to take effect withinthree weeks.
