India, Sept. 6 -- The recent NITI Aayog report on pulses projects a steady rise in production, but underscores the importance of achieving self-sufficiency in production. Beyond nutritional benefits, pulses enhance soil health, conserve water, and help to mitigate climate change. Due to the wide popularity and demand for pulses, the report emphasises on increasing yield to meet domestic demand. The relevance of the report lies in the fact that India needs to be 'Atmanirbhar' in pulses. The Government too supplies them to the States and Union Territories for welfare schemes like public distribution system, mid-day meal, among others.
