26-year-old woman dies by suicide over alleged dowry harassment; husband and in-laws arrested
India, June 18 -- A 26-year-old woman from Maharashtra's Ambernath allegedly died by suicide after enduring prolonged physical and mental harassment from her husband and in-laws over dowry demands. The incident has sparked outrage, with police arresting three members of her marital family on charges of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.
The deceased, identified as Vishakha Tilkar, was a commerce graduate from Pune who had married Dr. Nitin Tilkar, a BHMS practitioner based in Ulhasnagar, on April 30 through an arranged marriage. According to her family, no dowry was exchanged during the wedding. However, soon after the marriage, her husband and relatives allegedly began demanding 50 grams of gold from her parents.
