India, July 16 -- After 17 years of construction, the Sleemanabad Water Tunnel in Madhya Pradesh is nearing completion, marking a major milestone for the state's irrigation infrastructure. The 11.95-km tunnel, part of the Bargi Diversion Project, is designed to carry Narmada River water beneath the Vindhya hills to drought-prone districts in the Vindhya region, significantly improving irrigation and water availability.

Officials said the project is now in its final stage, with only a small portion of work remaining. Once operational, the tunnel will irrigate around 2.45 lakh hectares of farmland across nearly 1,450 villages in Katni, Satna, Maihar, Rewa and Panna districts.
