Manila, Oct. 22 -- The Philippines temporarily banned the importation of live cattle from Spain to prevent the spread of lumpy skin disease (LSD), the Department of Agriculture (DA) announced on Wednesday.
The Philippine government made the move following the official report of an LSD outbreak among domestic cattle in Spain on Oct. 1, according to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH).
In a statement, DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the order aims "to protect the health of the local cattle and water buffalo population."
It also serves as a "precautionary measure" against the entry of the LSD virus into the country, he added.
