Ilocos Sur LGU reiterates seasonal ban on catching goby fry
LAOAG CITY, Aug. 3 -- The provincial government of Ilocos Sur has reiterated the strict enforcement of the ban on catching goby fry, locally known as "ipon," during the months of August and February to protect the species during its peak migration season and ensure the sustainability of the province's fisheries.
"The prohibition is mandated under Provincial Ordinance No. 14-03, which makes it unlawful to catch goby fry during these two months," according to the Provincial Fisheries Division of the Office of the Provincial Agriculture on Monday.
The temporary fishing ban allows the young fish to migrate upstream, mature, reproduce and replenish the natural population, helping secure future harvests for fishing communities.
