India, March 3 -- The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday announced the passing of former secretary Alfredo Rafael Antonio Bengzon, describing him as a compassionate physician and visionary leader who championed accessible healthcare for Filipinos.
Bengzon, who served as DOH secretary from 1986 to 1992 under the Corazon Aquino administration passed away on Tuesday. He was 90.
In a statement, the DOH said Bengzon "devoted his life to making healthcare more accessible and affordable for every Filipino."
"His courageous push for the Generics Act of 1988, principled stance on family planning, and bold reorganization of the DOH reflected his unwavering commitment to integrity, equity, and public service," the DOH said.
