Manila, Oct. 1 -- Police investigators are looking at the possible involvement of the communist New People's Army (NPA) in the shooting to death of a former "barangay tanod" (village watchman) turned rescue team member in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.

Lt. Stephen Polinar, spokesperson for the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NOPPO), told the Philippine News Agency on Wednesday that the victim was a member of the Elite Rescue Team of Barangay Binalbagan.

A police report said the 30-year-old victim, a resident of Sitio Nabuluan in Barangay Binalbagan, was driving his motorcycle on his way home on Tuesday evening when two unidentified male assailants fatally shot him.
