Manila, July 16 -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court (SC) allowing the commission to hold special elections to fill vacant congressional seats without Congress declaring a vacancy.

"This strengthens the mandate of the Comelec that we can call special elections," Comelec Chairperson George Garcia said in an interview.

At the same time, Garcia said they would gather more details as to the ruling of the high tribunal on the case filed by Elroy John Hagedorn vs. the House of Representatives.
