Manila, March 17 -- The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) is calling for full reparation, official recognition, and a formal apology for the "Malaya Lolas," the Filipina survivors of wartime sexual slavery during the Japanese occupation in World War II.
In a Gender Ombud Policy Advisory released on Tuesday, the CHR emphasized that providing justice to the aging survivors remains an "urgent human rights obligation" that the Philippine government must address.
The move follows the March 2023 views issued by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), which found that the Philippines failed to adequately address the discrimination and suffering endured by the survivors.
