Manila, Sept. 17 -- The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has asked lawmakers to pass a law granting medical parole to inmates who are of advanced age, terminally ill or severely incapacitated.
BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. made the statement Tuesday during the deliberations on the proposed 2026 budget of the Department of Justice and its attached agencies by the Appropriations Committee of the House of Representatives.
Catapang said such a bill would institutionalize a system based on humanitarian considerations and global best practices, and ensure that elderly or terminally ill persons deprived of liberty maintain their dignity and provided appropriate medical care.
