Manila, April 24 -- The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) chair on Friday called for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and others, as it welcomed Myanmar's plan to free at least 4,000 prisoners.

"In particular, we welcome the release of U Win Myint, viewing this as a positive step towards inclusive national dialogue among all parties in Myanmar," its statement read.

"In this regard, we encourage the release of the remaining prisoners in Myanmar, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, in the spirit of genuine reconciliation and peace."
