900 cops deployed as surprise protest snarls EDSA traffic
Manila, June 30 -- Around 900 police officers were deployed to the People Power Monument along EDSA in Quezon City on Tuesday following what appeared to be a surprise protest by a religious group.
According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), its chief, Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., and his command group are closely monitoring the situation and are receiving real-time updates from field commanders.
The PNP said Nartatez is monitoring the situation "oversee police operations to ensure public safety, maintain the orderly flow of traffic, and keep the situation peaceful while respecting the rights of those involved."
