India, Sept. 14 -- For The Last of Us fans, multiplayer has become one of those ideas that keeps getting close to the finish line without ever quite crossing it. The latest attempt came from modder Speclizer, who had been working on a multiplayer mod for the PC version of The Last of Us Part II since January 2026. A public release was planned for September, but that is no longer happening.

Speclizer said they received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment asking that the mod not be released.

"Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day," Speclizer wrote while confirming that future work would shift to an original project.
