Punjab, Sept. 27 -- India added two squash silvers and two athletics bronzes on day eight, with the women's hockey team going through to the semi-finals on a perfect record and three boxers into quarter-finals.

Shankar came into international athletics as a high jumper and converted to the decathlon - a switch almost nobody makes successfully, because the decathlon punishes specialists in nine events to reward them in one.
A continental bronze on 7,934 points says the conversion worked. It is a competitive Asian score and a long way from the 8,500-plus that the event's global level demands, which is the honest frame for it.
