Punjab, Sept. 30 -- The Sensex closed 48.78 points lower at 72,480.29 and the Nifty fell 95.75 to 22,620.45 - a third straight losing session, after volatile trade that ended close to flat on the Sensex.

The split beneath the surface

17 of the Nifty's 50 stocks rose and 32 fell. Across the wider Nifty 500, advances trailed declines 245 to 251.

A near-even broad market with a falling index means the damage was concentrated in the heavyweights rather than spread across the market. That is a better picture than Monday's, when all 30 Sensex constituents closed red.

What moved

Realty, private banks and media gained. Healthcare, pharma, consumer durables and metals fell.
