Punjab, Sept. 23 -- The Defence Ministry has signed a contract worth about Rs 811 crore with Bharat Dynamics Limited for 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons for the Indian Air Force. Deliveries run from 2027-28 to 2028-29.
What SAT-SAAW is
A precision-guided glide bomb, launched from the air, designed to disable enemy airfields from a long stand-off range. It can be carried by the Jaguar, the Hawk and the Su-30 MKI.
"Stand-off" is the operative word. The aircraft releases it well outside the range of the air defences protecting the target, glides it in, and never enters the envelope. That is the entire point of the weapon and the reason air forces buy them.
