Punjab, Sept. 24 -- All public sector and regional rural bank branches will be open on Sunday, 27 September. The reason is the three-day strike that starts the next morning - and the five consecutive closed days it would otherwise have created.
The arithmetic
The United Forum of Bank Unions has called a strike for 28, 29 and 30 September. The 26th is a Saturday and the 27th a Sunday.
Without Sunday working, branch banking would have been unavailable from Saturday morning to Wednesday evening - five days, taking in a month-end when salaries, pensions, EMIs and rent all clear.
The Finance Ministry's instruction is aimed squarely at that.
