Fiji, Oct. 14 -- David Adeang has been elected unopposed as President of the Republic of Nauru at today's inaugural sitting of the country's 25th Parliament.

Adeang's election marks the start of a new parliamentary term following the general elections on the weekend.

Members of Parliament unanimously endorsed him during Tuesday's sitting.

Former President Marcus Stephen, a veteran leader and former Commonwealth Games gold medallist, was elected Speaker of the 25th Parliament, while Isabella Dageago took up the position of Deputy Speaker.

The election of the President and parliamentary leadership sets the stage for the formation of a new Cabinet and the government's policy agenda in the coming days.
