Bhubaneswar, June 17 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Odisha government to ensure that all social security benefits and basic amenities are provided to a visually impaired man and his 80-year-old mother living in extreme poverty in Sonepur district.

According to a report by Verdictum, a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice V Mohana issued the directions while hearing a suo motu case initiated based on media reports concerning the condition of Japa Bhue, who is blind since birth, and his mother, Radhika Bhue.

The Apex Court said its primary concern was whether the welfare schemes implemented by the state were translating into a life of dignity for the mother and son.
