Bhubaneswar, June 9 -- The Supreme Court has ruled that a consensual premarital relationship between two unmarried adults cannot, by itself, be treated as moral turpitude or used to draw adverse conclusions about a person's character.

The observation came while allowing the recruitment of a man into the Telangana Police force after his selection was cancelled over a past criminal case linked to a relationship that later ended in a dispute.

According to the reports by TOI, the case was heard by a bench of Justices Manoj Misra and Manmohan, which set aside the Telangana government's decision to deny the candidate appointment despite the matter being settled in a Lok Adalat.
