Bhubaneswar, April 20 -- A strong 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday, triggering a tsunami that impacted coastal areas shortly after. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), a tsunami wave measuring 80 centimetres was recorded at a port in Kuji at approximately 5:34 pm local time.
Earlier, the agency had reported a 70-centimetre wave reaching the same location at 5:32 pm, indicating a rapid escalation in wave height within minutes. Authorities continue to closely monitor coastal regions for additional wave activity and potential aftershocks following the earthquake.
