India's century-old folk sport gilli-danda 'hijacked' by America, 'rebranded' as Dainty? Viral clip sparks debate, watch
Bhubaneswar, Aug. 24 -- Long before cricket became India's sporting obsession, gilli-danda was a familiar sight in neighbourhoods, villages and open grounds. Played using a small, tapered wooden stick called gilli and a longer stick known as danda, the game requires players to flick the smaller stick into the air before striking it as far as possible. Variations of the traditional game have been played across the Indian subcontinent for centuries.
Now, a remarkably similar game thousands of kilometres away has caught the internet's attention.
