Bhubaneswar, Aug. 9 -- Hirakud Reservoir in Odisha's Sambalpur opened four more gates on Sunday amid heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas and increased inflow of water into the reservoir.

As per reports, with the latest gates opening, water is now being released through a total of 12 gates.

Earlier, eight gates of the reservoir were open and water was being discharged through them. As the inflow increased due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas, four additional gates were opened today.

The Hirakud Dam has a total water-holding capacity of 630 feet.
