Centre circulates draft National Water Metro Policy, prepares for nationwide rollout in 18 cities
Bhubaneswar, May 19 -- The Union Government is fast-tracking plans to introduce Water Metro services across India, with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) circulating the Draft National Water Metro Policy, 2026 for inter-ministerial consultation. The move signals a push to formalize a national framework for urban water transport, leveraging India's extensive network of navigable waterways.
Phase I of the rollout will include Guwahati, Srinagar, Patna, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Prayagraj, while Phase II will focus on Tezpur and Dibrugarh in Assam.
