Bhubaneswar, May 31 -- Baranga police station Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) Niranjan Behera was transferred to the Cuttack DCP office following allegations that a youth was subjected to third-degree treatment while in police custody. The incident had sparked public protests and demands for action.

The transfer was carried out on May 29, a day after villagers staged demonstrations and blocked a National Highway over the alleged custodial assault. Police sources said the transfer was made to facilitate an unbiased investigation into the matter.
