We launch an application or browse to a website, and the information is magically there in seconds. But the Internet isn't one big network; it's a huge collection of thousands of smaller, independent networks that need a way to communicate with each other. If there is a local network that requires traffic to be sent to a server on the other side of the world, it is not possible to build a direct cable line all the way there. Rather, it has to send out more traffic through the larger network to traverse the map, the fundamental principle behind the transportation of data around the world.
